I joined the beat the backlog challenge created by owlbesatreading to deal with my unread kindle books neglected for years. But instead of posting individual reviews, here is my end of month summary. Unfortunately, I only managed two and ended up buying three.
Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri
Why did I get the book:
I bought this after I enjoyed reading the second book of the Ambha series,Realm of Ash
Why did I get the book: an Amazon 99p deal and I love fantasy
How long has this been on my Kindle? : Not that long compared to some- 2019
Review
A typical fantasy featuring a young woman with a deadly power battling a deadly enemy with deadly allies and political shenanigans. There is some great world-building and I loved that women and men rule equally without any drama
Do I kick myself for not reading this sooner?
No. I don’t think I will be reading the rest of the books in this series .

The Raven Spell by Luanne Smith
Why did I get the book: an Amazon Prime pick and I love fantasy
How long has this been on my Kindle? : Not that long compared to some- 2021
Review
This fantasy set in Victorian England was an easy and enjoyable read.
The book switches between the third person points of view from Ian and Edwina’s perspective. Ian and Edwina are nice, straight forward characters and the hint of romance between is sweet. Mary is more a complex character and I have to say her motivations for her actions remained unclear to me by the end.
The underlying mystery was engaging but I could guess this eventual outcome. The descriptions of Victorian England were vivid but there were few ‘American words’ that made me grit my teeth.

Perfectly impossible by Elizabeth Topp
Why did I get the book: This was an Amazon Prime pick and it looked like light and fun read.

This was a DNF. I couldn’t get into the story and gave up after two chapters. I found the main character annoying as were the secondary characters.

Cunk on Everything by Philomena Cunk
How Long has this been on my Kindle?
2020
Why did I get this book?
I love Philomena Cunk, played by Diane Morgan- a clueless journalist who can get away with some hard-hitting questions in amongst the stupid ones.
Review
I couldn’t help laughing at some of Cunk’s take on various serious topics. Here are a few examples
“King Arthur was the greatest King of England that never existed” and “ Books are a way of storing information and passing it on to anyone who can read and isn’t put it off by being a book.”.
A lovely book that is hilarious but hides a cynical view of the world.
I joined the beat the backlog challenge created by @owlbesatreading to drive down the books sitting on my kindle unread and neglected for years. But instead of posting individual reviews, I plan on one big update at the end of each month and hopefully that list will go down. Unfortunately found more books hidden away in my kindle library. The Rule of One by Ashley Chambersand Leslie Saunders
How Long has this been on my Kindle?
Probably since 2018.
Why did I get this book?
I’m not sure why I chose this book but I think the bright yellow cover and the plot caught my eye from the other books on the Amazon prime picks.
Review
I finished this book in about an hour and a half. The concept of a dystopian world where families can only have one child isn’t new, but I still enjoyed reading this form the point of view of the children who are impacted on this. The book is a mixture of dystopia, coming of age, road movie and resistance tropes but the overall outcome is interesting.
There would have been a time many years ago when I would have thought the USA of this book would never have been a possibility but these days, I am not so sure!

Do I kick myself for not reading this sooner?
No while it was an enjoyable and thought provoking read, it wasn’t for me
Choose me by Tess Gerristen and Gary Braver
How Long has this been on my Kindle
I think from August 2021
Why did I get this book?
I think it was another amazon prime pick. In fact, I don’t remember downloading this!
Review
This was an enjoyable quick read with Tess Gerristen usual interesting female detective, a fast-paced plot and murder. What made this different is the that lead character is a normal, middle-aged woman with normal middle-aged hang-ups. The book is also less about the murder and more about the tragic consequences of cheating on a loved one.

I love Kate Mosse’s book, so jumped in and bought this book when it was on Amazon’s daily deals
